So I did a thing... I trimmed some of my dreads, only about a third. The dead, crispy, damaged ends were really getting me down.
Actually the indecision was getting me down. I love the length of my dreads, and I have a big sentimental attachment to the portions of dreads I made all those years ago, but the hair was previously bleached and it was damaged and gross. When they formed they were super stiff, thick, and almost completely unbendable.
Compare that to my grown dreads which are soft and thin, and all one colour.
I will miss the ombré affect, and I will miss the way my dreads flow because of the weight directly at the end, but something had to be done about those heavy disgusting ends. They sucked up a lot of crap during my travels and I hate to think what's lurking in those ends.
So I will let them grow further before attacking any more of them. I'm not sure I like the way they sit anymore... I think I made a mistake but we will see.
Yeh the wraps shocked me actually because I didn't realise how bad it was. I don't suffer from headaches as a rule but I was suffering badly. Luckily I didn't suffer from tension on my actual scalp as my hair is strong.
Yeh I think you're right, perhaps in a year when the length becomes unmanageable I shall trim them up!
Thank you jxbx! Yeh the weight became a real issue, I had no idea how heavy the wraps actually were until I cut them out, nearly a kilo when wet! My poor head! I'm so much happier with less going on now, I'll stick to my charms and beads, the only dilemma I'm facing right now is the brittle ends.
When I dreaded my hair, I still had old bleached parts that were very dry, those parts of my dreads are completely solid and much thicker than the dreads that have grown naturally. While I like the shape, and the weight they carry, I'm not sure if it's sensible to keep that old damaged hair. One of the ends literally broke off recently and it really freaked me out
But never mind, my dreads as a whole are fantastic, and from the root they are incredibly healthy. I'm so proud!
I have 36 (I started with about 48 and ended up brushing all the front ones out to bring them off my face which drove me crazy.) I also have one dread I turned into a braid and is now redreading from scratch. One dread has split from the root but is still attached at the end, and another has Congoed into one. My dreads range from sharpie size to jumbo cigar size, lots of different thicknesses!
