I made my "dreads" about 3 months ago with the twist and rip method and they still don't look anything like dreads, so I constantly twist and rip them when they start to untangle. Is that a good idea or should I just leave them to do what they want? I know they would form naturally if I leave them but I'm worried it would take an extremely long time as I have straight caucasian hair.
Hello! So the hairs need to move to form knots and ultimately form dreadlocks. If you doing twist and rip on them, you’re not giving them the opportunity. It does take time for hair to lock up and form mature dreadlocks. I’m afraid that patience is part of the journey.
There are things you can do to help the process along though. Make sure you are using a good dreadlocks shampoo. Some use sea salt sprays to accelerate the knots. Others may use T-gel shampoo or wool rubbing. Check our Lazy Dreads on YouTube and we also have some faqs on this site.
It will take a long time. Unfortunately, that's just how it is - embrace the journey! Think of twist and rip as a head start for the dreadlocks to form, rather than dreads themselves. Three months is still quite young, leave them be and they'll tighten up nicely.
Three months is early days. It’s not advisable to keep redoing them even if they half fall out. You’ll just undo any minor progress they made. The come undone for many folk but then just when you want to give up they start knotting themselves again. Then you are in business.
Have a look at my timeline. It took nearly 3 years for my hair to look like dreads. ( it should happen for you in 6 months) I was a bit odd. But the point is... keep the faith. It pays off, just letting go of caring.
