I think a lot of people can have that experience of reading. I still do now occasionally. My mind will start to wonder but my eyes will still scan the words and so I'll get to the end of a page and realise I've no idea what I just read. It think it's normal.... for me it (mostly) went away when I started to read more fiction and then I have the thing I've mentioned of having a 'director' in my head and seeing the story like a movie in my mind. That seems to keep me more locked in.
To be honest, I love books on philosophy etc but I struggle to read them these days. I'd say I'm really into it at the start but get bored halfway through and it becomes a chore. So I fulfil that interest with podcasts that talk about that stuff now, instead, otherwise I have the same issue you mention.
