I had a centipede crawl out of one of my dreads and land on my arm. It had to have been in there a couple of days, because the only time we were anywhere that had centipedes was when we were camping in the mountains. Gross!
But yeah, Yogi, I get freaked out about the idea of bugs in/on/near my hair. The worst is during summer when I go for a walk and keep finding midges on my shirt, arms etc.... I think they must be landing on my head, too, so I have to try stuff all of my hair into a hat.
Yeah, I think I've told this before but I was cycling once and a wasp flew STRAIGHT into the root of a dread. It was stuck there, vibrating away, until I reached up to try and remove it and stuck my finger right on its sting.... I then just pulled it out, arse-first.
That feeling when they're stuck and buzzing is horrible, isn't it? -.-
I was reminded by a post in another thread that mentioned spiders, but have you guys had it when you're sitting there and then suddenly one of the little eight-legged gits sails down in front of your face from your locks? It doesn't happen very often but I've had it probably 4-5 times, always makes me jump.
I get this all the time, I just put them back in my locks. I probably have a whole menagerie in there at times. I think its because I miss the tarantulas I used to keep

The closest I've (thankfully) gotten to the spider thing is finding a huge spider leg in my hair. Yeah, no. No spiders. NO. lol
I occasionally feel like something might be crawling but it goes away if I leave an area or wash my hair. I think it's probably not a bug, just energy or something. I used to freak myself out when a strand of my own hair would brush across my skin, pre-dreads. Or one would shed and fall and I would panic because clearly it was a spider. *rolls eyes at myself*

Haha moths. Noooo.
A recent event led me to realize that sometimes getting stuff in dreads is fun and sometimes it's horrific. Word of advice: if you feel nauseated to any degree, even if it's been 10 years since your last vomit and have had many times before where you fought it off over those ten years, PUT YOUR HAIR UP AND KEEP IT UP UNTIL YOU FEEL OK AGAIN.
I was at a football game and I had my dreads in a bun and this girl behind taps my shoulder and says don't freak out but there's a wasp in you hair and she just slapped it out of my hair I was like thanks girl haha

chesh: Hey rye, under the "Dreadlock FAQ" >>> "The Basics" there is information on washing on the bottom. In my experience so far it has been best to wash my dreads when they get itchy and use a dry shampoo to help with the oils that are produced naturally.

SketchyMagpie: Hey. It differs on hair type but generally speaking, you can lose up to between 25-50% of the length. Most people will be around the 25%-35% mark, ish.

FriendlyGoblin: Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting dreadlocks and I was wondering how much they'd shrink. I have medium-thick hair that is decently damaged and is 20" thick from scalp to tip. I'm also white. I'm thinking of getting them so they're life sized ruler
